Packaging Cases

Read dated packaging examples and translate them into bounded design questions.

What this section helps you decide

A published packaging example can explain why a decoration approach was chosen, but it cannot prove the same result on another bottle. Here, historical examples are dated and attributed, with a clear distinction between what a source reported and what remains to be evaluated. Small cosmetic containers and beverage bottles are considered from the label and application perspective.

For a complementary view, continue to Materials.

A reading route

  1. Read the original report and note the year, package and purpose of the decoration.
  2. Separate reported design choices from conclusions about today’s materials or machinery.
  3. Use the materials and application sections to build a sample evaluation for your own container.

For a dated example of how transparent graphics and the bottle worked together, read Clear Bottle Labels: The Ethos Water Packaging Example. Separate the historical reporting from the conditions a present-day project still needs to verify.

For a small bottle or jar, establish the usable area with Small Cosmetic Bottle and Jar Labels: Define the Usable Label Zone. Work from the actual straight wall, shoulder and seam rather than a generic size.
